Understanding Alain

Article at a Glance:

Alain's a complicated man, and in order to navigate him you need to first determine what mood he's in. He has two main personalities and approximately two sub-personalities, within each of the two primary personalties, you may find two more.
 Who is this man?
He is Alain Palinski, a Russian-American born entrepreneur born on October 29, 1981. He was born in New York and raised in New York. Alain was a competitive professional tennis player in his teen years.
He was a fabulous athlete in his prime, although today he's somewhat lazy.
I met him through a mutual friend in 2005 in Miami Beach where I was training for a Muay Thai fight. I was hungry and tired and sitting in the group table at a restaurant where me and other fighters were eating our tiny pre-fight meals. He was shouting obscenities in my ear and embarrassing all of us.
I wanted to murder him the first day I met him. But he let me borrow his Audi A8 for the week and we used the swimming pool at his dad's Ocean Boulevard condominium, so I began to think more highly of him. Over the next two years, Alain popped up at all of the events and parties I would frequent. He was my go-to friend in Miami if I needed anything at all.
Alain was an unlikely connector of people from all walks of life, although he was always 40 decibels too loud at all times. He would say things at gatherings when he was sober that would make a drunkard cringe. He was always the life of the party.
In 2009, I went down to Miami looking for a location to start my first Juice Press store. I interacted with Alain while I was there, and he showed me Miami inside and out. I decided against opening a store in Florida and opted instead to open my first store (store one) in New York City. In 2010, Alain crashed through the door of store one on East First Street and we entered into our turbulent business relationship.
Alain is my unofficial co-founder of Juice Press. He drove me nuts from day one. But without question, I could not have done a lot of the things I did without his madness and his Midas touch. He left Juice Press in 2012 and went off to start some great projects on his own, including The Kollectiv on East First Street.
Alain is a certified health nut. He's loud and he's abrasive, but he's visionary. It took me a long time to understand him. He's extraordinarily talented in many things. He's a really good human being, and I trust him implicitly.
In November 2020 he invited me to build my first goodsugar™ store inside of his existing retail business (The Kollectiv).

1. Happy and Excited Alain
1A. Happy and excited, stressed out, distracted
1B. Happy and excited, highly focused

2. Agitated Alain
2A. Agitated and down, distracted
2B. Agitated and highly functioning
It may not be worth your while to engage in his madness, but it's always been well worth it for me. I made some great things happen with my boy Alain. I have figured out how to navigate his moods and how to keep him calm when he's seeing red.
Alain is a treasure trove of nonsensical and meaningful ideas. He has great style and terrible style simultaneously.
    • He needs an audience.
    • He loves, loves nature.
    • He has integrity.
    • He yearns to help others.
    • He's a family man.
    • He's knowledgable in many subjects.
By his own admission, he's nuts. But he's been that way consistently since I met him in 2005. He does what he says he's going to do. And if he dies sometime at age 112, he will be the same loud, fast talking, sweet guy, depending on the mood of the day.
I'm really glad that I'm in business with this man. And I would take Alain as a partner (which I did) any day of the week over some of the unsavory partners that I've had in the past.
